Description

The Cone Nebula is an HII region in Monoceros.  It forms part of the nebulosity surrounding the Christmas Tree Cluster - the designation NGC 2264 refers to both the cluster and nebula. The Cone Nebula, discovered by William Herschel in 1785, is approximately seven light years long and is about 2700 light years from Earth.  The cone's shape comes from a dark absorption nebula consisting of cold molecular hydrogen and dust in front of a faint emission nebula containing hydrogen ionized by S Monocerotis, the brightest star of NGC 2264.  Another object within this complex region is the Fox Fur Nebula (Sh2- 273) which is also illuminated by the ultraviolet radiation from the hot, blue stars of the NGC 2264 cluster.
