Description

This galaxy is located 40 million light years away in the constellation of Cygnus at a declination of +30 degrees. This magnitude 11.3 galaxy spans 4.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 55,000 light years.

The structure of this galaxy is fascinating to me. It is hard to classify - I have seen it described as a spiral galaxy and a lenticular galaxy. It looks to be a bit of both. A ring surrounds the bright core. The ring is surrounded by a dark dust lane. Two very faint spiral arms extend out from the ring section to the outer disk, but the majority of the disk is featureless.

The very faint galaxy far in the distance at the right end of the disk is LEDA 1881063. The bright orange 10th magnitude star in the foreground, 5000 light years away, is a bit of a distraction to viewing the galaxy.
