Description

4.7 magnitude Alsafi (sigma draconis) sits amongst some dusty nebulae - LBN464, 465, 469, 481 - in the constellation of Draco. I chose this target after I spotted the area in Sky Safari and then reviewed it in surveys in Aladin. I could tell there was something there, but not much, and as I could find no other images, I thought I'd have a go. If nothing else, it proves there really isn't much there!

I looked up Alsafi, and I like this Wikipedia quote (hopefully true) - "It bore the traditional name Alsafi, derived from the Arabic Athāfi, itself erroneously transcribed from the Arabic plural Athāfiyy, by which the nomads designated the tripods of their open-air kitchens".  So really Alsafi in Arabic was referring to the trio of stars sigma, tau and epsilon draconis.

Anyway, it's rather bright, and I've not really been able to reduce its impact, so I might as well include it in the title! As I often do with RASA images, I removed stars for the nebula processing, and then added back. I found this didn't work very well with Alsafi, and I had to bring it up quite a bit using a mask in order to remove artifacts relating to the large halo and reduced star. Overall this image required some fairly curvy curves, and this has also meant that other brightish stars across the frame have halos from the background stretch. I'm not going to try and remove them, so this is it.
