Description

This object is a large HII region located 6000 light years away in the constellation of Serpens at a declination of -12 degrees.

The most interesting part of this image to me is the small oval bright HII patch near the center. This patch, known as both Gum 85 and Simeis 3-132, is best seen in the full resolution view. It has 2 nicknames - the Egg, and the Scary Face. Gum 85 is surrounded by a larger HII patch, Gum 84, which has the nickname of the Nest. The entire area is Sh2-54 and has a span of 130 light years.

Some interesting HII fronts and dust pillars are seen towards the right side of the nebula. A bright open cluster, NGC 6604, is seen just below and right of center.
