Description

Thor's Helmet is an emission nebula located in the Canis Major constellation. While reading about it, I found out that it also carries the less glorious name of "The Duck Nebula". What's interesting about it is the central star responsible for the massive ejection of material, it is a Wolf Rayet star (WR 7). As you know WR stars carry numbers since we are aware of 220 so far in our Galaxy. It is a massive star that is in an advanced evolution stage, very bright, but this one is the second smallest known WR after WR2 (Wikipedia). Its mass is around 13 solar masses and it's 229000 more brighter than the Sun.

This was a narrowband project at the end of 2021 using the robotic ASA Newtonian from Chilescope. The OIII signal is very strong. I played around with different Luminance compositions, but finally the most balanced details were obtained with a simple SHO combination. I generally want to integrate the details and signal from all elements and the Sulphur produces very nice digital structures on the upper wings of the helmet, even if overall it carries less information.

Since it is my first published project of 2022, I wish everyone all the best in the New Year and clear skies!
