Description

This is NGC 4236, a barred spiral in Draco. This is a member of the M81 group and is anywhere from 11.7 to 21 million light years away depending upon source. There is really not a lot of information readily available about this galaxy and that which are available are somewhat conflicting. So to me, its statistical characteristics are unclear. On the freestarcharts.com website, they list the vitals on this to be 11.7 million light years distant, a radius of 37,500 lys., and containing greater than 100 billion stars.

This is rather diffuse and really is quite blue. I saw an item on cloudynights which explained that as being the result of it being blue shifted. Since it is rather diffuse and has a quite low surface brightness, I included the inverse monochrome version as a mouse-over to maybe help see the structure a little better,

When I did my RGB on this one I noticed the knots and thought that perhaps there might be some nice Ha to capture. So I did some of that and found that indeed it is there. When I applied it, I really tried to use some restraint to respect that blue shift. I did incorporate the Ha data into the red channel of the RGB image as well.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this one, it was great fun to capture and process...

Clear skies and health to you all!
