Description

I was able to image Comet C/2020 F3 (Neowise) from my suburban DC backyard on the night of July 27, 2020. Between the light pollution in my backyard location, the ~30% illuminated moon, and the dimming of the comet, it was a lot harder to image than my first session about a week earlier. I was not able to find the comet in binoculars from my backyard, but the bright green coma was unmistakible in the images. Not much of the tail is visible in these images (the ion tail still shows up with an extreme stretch). This capture was taken around 9:45 pm. High clouds and haze rolled in soon after, so my early images turned out the best.

Imaged with a Nikon D5300 and Rokinon 85mm/F1.4 at F2.8 and IDAS LPSD1 filter and an exposure at ISO400 x 15s. This is a stack of 50 images generated using Pixinsight. Post-processed in Pixinsight: Cropped, gradient removal with ABE, MLT for noise reduction, photometric color calibration stretched using masked stretch, Curves Transformation, TGVDenoise for noise reduction, Local histogram transform, morphological transform to shrink stars, and color saturation boost.
