      Description

A crop of the "core" of the Flaming Star Nebula.  I decided on a starless SHO version to showcase the fasinating cloud- and mountain-like structures as well as the fainter wisps of nebulosity.  This is Part 1 of two images with Part 2 being the full nebula SHO image with RGB stars.

      Full SHO image with stars:

IC 405 - The Flaming Star Nebula

The Flaming Star Nebula (also IC405, Sharpless 229 or Caldwell 31) is an emission and reflection nebula.  It is about 1500 light years distant and is approximately 5 light years in diameter.  It is illuminated by the blue variable star AE Aurigae - a runaway star that might have been ejected during a collision of two binary star groups.  This collision has been traced back to the Trapezium cluster in the Orion Nebula two million years ago.

      Imaged over several nights:  Nov 7-9, 15, 17, 20-21 and 24, 2022.
