Description

The Bubble Nebula is a hydrogen emission region in the constellation Cassiopeia, located somewhere between 7,000 - 11,000 lightyears away. The bubble itself is the result of the hot, fast stellar wind of a massive young star (SAO 20575) who is carving out the gas. The nebula is surrounded by an enormous molecular cloud that is also being energized by the distant sun's fiery glow.  The central star is thought to have a mass 44 times that of our own Sun!

In the lower right of the image is open cluster M52, a group of about 200 stars with an average age of only 158.5 million years.  It was discovered by Charles Messier in 1774 during his search for things-that-look-like-comets-but-aren't. It lies closer to us than the Bubble at 4,600 lightyears away. It's a nice target for a pair of binoculars.

In the lower left of the image is the nebula NGC 7538, located about 9,100 lightyears away.  Within this nebula is the largest-known protostar, which is a newborn star that is still gathering material from the surrounding nebula in which it was born. This one in particular is 300 times the size of our Solar System!
