Description

20210824 - A Pelican in the Mexican Gulf, in the glow of the full moon

What was the experience
Given the hardship the full moon was giving me, can’t think of a better title to make this more beautiful than it was the night itself 😅
The full moon was washing out my subs on the target I intended to take, and anything that was about 90 degrees in the neighbourhood 🙄
So, off to select an ‘easy’ target .. a bird that didn’t fly away in the moonlit night 😂 .. The Pelican Nebula. About 30% of my FoV with the RedCat/ASI183, so big enough
To make it more interesting, I processed it in 2 different ways, straight RGB, and an SHO-simulation (Hubble-like)

What’s in the picture(s)
IC 5070 - The Pelican Nebula - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pelican_Nebula
Quote: “The Pelican Nebula (also known as IC 5070 and IC 5067[1]) is an H II region associated with the North America Nebula in the constellationCygnus. The gaseous contortions of this emission nebula bear a resemblance to a pelican, giving rise to its name”

How it was done
Scope: WO RedCat 51
Mount: SW EQ6-R Pro
Camera: ASI183MC PRO
Filter: Optolong L-Extreme
Guiding: ASIAIR Pro, ZWO30F4, ASI120MM
Resolution: 1,98”/pixel, FoV 218’
Moon: 97%(-), Bortle 5/6 SQM 19.60
Photons:  Gain 125, cooling -10, 300s, 60x (o/w 60 processed, a good night)
Darks 51x
Processing: PixInsight (Mac)

What have I learned from this
I’ve processed the rgb a bit hard on the colours, or … it could’ve been because of the frustration ☺️ for the full moon that I yanked the curves a bit too much. But the Pelican (or red flamingo 😂) sits nicely in the Mexican Gulf. Could’ve famed a bit more to the left, but I wanted the Pelican to be center piece.
The SHO-Simulation seems to have turned out quite nice as well, given that I didn’t have any SII-data to begin with. Colours are a matter of taste. This one turned out to be more neon-like

Clear Skies everybody! 🤩✨🔭
