Description

Object/Date:
C/2019 L3 (ATLAS) @ 2021 March 12, 02:41 UT

Description:
Comet C/2019 L3 ATLAS imaged on March 12, 2021. It is the first image I took of this comet, which must be huge since it still is located almost 5 U.A. from Earth and its brightness is at magnitude 12. Unfortunately its perihelion will be very far, to 3.5 U.A. from the Sun in early 2022 when it could reach between magnitude 9 and 10. In the image is seen a strong condensed coma with 35 arcseconds in angular size and a short northward tail. Complete the scene, of course, the planetary nebula M 76 (the Little Dumbbell Nebula) to the right of the bright red star of magnitude 6.6.
