Description

This object is a barred spiral galaxy located 50 million light years away in the constellation of Fornax at a declination of -26 degrees. The 9.5 magnitude galaxy has a surface brightness of 13.3 and spans 8 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 120,000 light years. The galaxy looks somewhat face-on but is actually inclined 40 degrees from edge-on.

The galaxy has a fascinating structure. The bright core is surrounded by an almost equally bright oval section within a larger circle. This transitions into a distinct long bar, which terminates in an inner ring. Subtle thin arms extend out from this ring into the fuzzy galaxy disk.

I could not identify the interesting tiny disturbed galaxy to the upper left.
