Description

The Witches Broom, or Western Veil, is an expanding shock wave with intricate webbed structure of ionized hydrogen, oxygen, and sulfur.  Each component is well visualized by color.

This expanding shell is part of the Cynus Loop supernova that occurred 10K to 20K years ago.   The full extent of the explosion now covers ~3 degrees of the sky, and multiple NGC objects (Eastern Veil, Pikering's Triangle, Western Veil).   The Western Veil, NGC 6960, is thought to be about 2500 light-years distant.   The diameter of the nebula is ~130 light-years (Wikipedia).
