Description

A composite of 129min integral of 9P/Tempel 1 [1] (currently about +14m) quickly passing through the star fields of Sgr near NGC 6717 (Palomar 9) [2] globular cluster on Mar 5, 2022 including:

- 15min of L exposure using Telescope #1 (ASA-RC D = 1m f/6.8, FLI ProLine 16803) system of ChileScope observatory captured on a single imaging session carried out of Mar 4, 2022 (5 sequential 180s frames with comet present in the field of view).

- 114min of LRGB exposure using Telescope #5 (Officina Stellare Riccardi-Honders RH200 D = 200mm f/3, FLI Microline 16200) system ChileScope observatory captured on 5 separate imaging sessions carried out on Mar 4, 5, 6, 7, 11, 2022 (only L exposures collected on Mar 4, 5, 2022, and only RGB - on Mar 6, 7, 11).

Only a small portion of the T5 frame is used as color overlay only, while the full T5 images is also shown in [3] (comet is too small and dim to show up in that wide angle image, even though it must have been present there during Mar 4, 5, 6, 2022 sessions).

A hint of the tail of the comet is detectible, but not obvious.

Title: Comet 9P/Tempel 1 dashing through the star field of Sgr - the attempt to bring up the tail

Description: 15min integral L exposure of 9P/Tempel 1 (currently about +14m) quickly passing through the star fields of Sgr near NGC 6717 (Palomar 9) globular cluster - captured using Telescope #1 (ASA-RC D = 1m f/6.8, FLI ProLine 16803) system of ChileScope observatory. The wider field of view for this area is also available under [1].

The composite insert in the lower left corner shows the attempt of bringing up the tail of the comet by running the difference between the first frame and the last frame (frames 1 and 5) in the sequence and suppressing all non-diffuse objects on those (note the 1.5x magnification applied with respect to the source images made for convenience of viewing).
