Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a collisional ring galaxy located 390 million light years away in the constellation of Canes Venatici at a declination of +37 degrees. It spans 40 arc-seconds in our apparent view, a bit bigger than our view of Jupiter. The object has a diameter of 80,000 light years and has a magnitude of 14.3.

I could find no other images of this object besides that of the SDSS survey.

I love collisional ring galaxies , especially ones like this which seem to show the apparent “hit and run” culprit dwarf galaxy. This small galaxy is LEDA 2087677, 25,000 light years in diameter. Data shows both galaxies to be at the same distance. I am fascinated by the short star stream segment which appears between the two galaxies.

This object has the nickname of the Kidney Bean Galaxy. I am not sure which I like less - kidney beans or DSO nicknames. But I would eat a whole barrel of kidney beans if it would mean that I could erase that nickname from my memory, so that I could see a beautiful galaxy when I look at this object and not just a legume named after a body part.
