Description

M8 is also known as the Lagoon Nebula. It is located about 5,200 light-years from Earth and about 110 light years across! Within this huge star forming region, we find its own star cluster: NGC 6530. The solar winds from the massive stars embedded within the nebula produce huge amounts of ultraviolet radiation, ionizing the gas and producing the glow we see here. Hydrogen gas glowing red and OIII gas glowing a blueish-cyan, the bright stars also adding a blue tint in the core area.
