Description

This Astrobin debut object is the closest object to the north star that I have ever imaged. It is a pair of interacting galaxies located 210 million light years away in the constellation of Cepheus at a declination of +87 degrees. I couldn’t find anything written on this object.

Dr. Arp placed this object in the category of Elliptical Galaxy Companions on Arms. As often happens, I find this categorization a bit of a stretch. It is a fine Arp object, but they are fairly well separated and I wouldn’t say that the companion is on the spiral arm.

The spiral galaxy, UGC 3528A, is a face-on grand spiral with 2 gorgeous arms and a distinct core. The galaxy is about 50,000 light years in diameter. The elliptical galaxy, UGC 3536A (PGC 20066), is about the same size. The star stream connecting the 2 galaxies is at least 80,000 light years in length. I love these star stream bridges - my Astrobin collection of them is here.

The interesting edge-on spiral ring galaxy at upper left, MCG+14-04-014 (PGC 20191) is at the same distance as the Arp 96 objects, making this a triple galaxy system.
