Description

This object is a spiral galaxy located 40 million light years away in the constellation of Columba at a declination of -38 degrees. This magnitude 9.9 galaxy spans 4.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 55,000 light years. Our view of it is about 30 degrees from edge-on.

This is a wonderful object. The core of this galaxy is fascinating to me, with numerous bright yellow and blue round regions which are likely areas of recent star formation. An “S” arm structure is faintly visible although much of is interrupted by dark dust lane regions. At the upper left, thin dust lanes appear to extend radially from the core up through the disk. At each end of the disk, faint extended star stream arms are visible.
