Description

After several months of playing around with various narrowband data sets and Pixinsight, I believe that I have finally managed to get the detail and overall feel that I am pursuing. One of the many wonderful things about narrowband imaging is that the color-mapping process allows a dozen people to image the same object, using the exact same equipment, and yet get a dozen differing results in the end. I believe this is a large part of what makes astrophotography so personal to us all. Think about it, anyone can go online at any given time and view hundreds of images of the North American Nebula, but this one is mine! I did something a bit different when processing this image. I went in with a completely open mind and the openness to try new techniques and really experiment a bit. I didn’t care about proper star color calibration, proper mixing of the H-alpha and Oxy-III data, or even having a perfectly black background sky. I just wanted a pretty picture! My goals were quite simple…to pull as much faint nebulosity from the data as possible, to adjust each channel for maximum visual impact, and to create what I would call a pretty picture that I could share with friends. I feel that my goals have been accomplished. As a side note, all of this data was acquired within 2 days of the last full moon, which happened to be my first few clear nights in a while. So when the sky gives you lemons...you image in narrowband! Enjoy!

As always, comments and criticisms welcomed.
