Description

This reflection and emission nebula, also known as vdB 33, is located 1,300 light-years away in the constellation of Orion at a declination of -3 degrees.  This nebula spans 7 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 3 light years.

The bright star NSV 1832, at the center of the bright central pinkish region, is believed to be illuminating this nebula.  I like the contrast between the colorful bright central region of this nebula and the dark dusty area immediately to the right.  The dust cloud obscures many young stars, which can only be seen in the infrared. A wide path of reddish hydrogen gas arcs vertically across the image on the left side.

This object is nicknamed the Fox Face Nebula and the Flying Bat.  Unlike many nicknames, the central reflection nebula actually resembles a fox.  If you need help finding the fox, check out my wider FOV of this object here, specifically Revision B.
