Description

M 77 is a barred spiral galaxy ( also known as NGC 1068 ) located in constellation Cetus. It is 60 Millon Light Years from the earth. M 77 was discovered by Pierre Mechain in 1780, who originally described it as a nebula. Pierre Mechain communicated his discovery to Charles Messier, who listed the object in his catalog. Both Messier and Willian Herschel descripted this galaxy as a star cluster. Today, the object is known to be a galaxy.
