Description

M 76 is a spiral galaxy also known as (NGC 650/651, The Little Dumbbell, Barbell Nebula and Cork Nebula) which is located in the constellation Perseus. It was discovered by Pierre Mechain in 1780 and included in Charles Messier's catalog as 76. It was first recognized by Herber Doust Cutis as a planetary nebula in1918. However, there is some contention to this claim, as Issac Roberts in 1891 did suggest that M 76 might be similar to the Ring Nebula M 57. This structure is now classed as a bipolar planetary nebula.

M76 is located 3,400 light years from earth.
