Description

M101 is a spiral galaxy in the constellation Ursa Major. It is approximately 27 million light years from Earth, and estimated to have a diameter of greater than 170,000 light years, making it almost twice the size of the Milky Way.

HALRGB data was acquired over a two night span in February and March, separated by almost a month. Sometime after the first nights acquisition, I updated NINA. and did not notice that NINA had updated the ZWO SDK for my camera (ASI294MM Pro). This update unlocked the native Bin 1X1 mode, so I ended up with mixed bin modes (2X2 and 1X1) for some filters. This which meant my well depths were radically different for the same exposure times (among other things); my RGB data was not uniformly exposed and my LUM data ended up over-exposed for my liking. I had to throw away about half of the LUM data I recorded. Anyway, it was a nightmare to process, and this was the best I could salvage.

There is a lot going on in this area of the sky, so have included an annotated plate solved image.
