Description

This pair of interacting galaxies is located 50 million light years away in the constellation of Ursa Major at a declination of +49 degrees.

The grand design spiral galaxy is NGC 3893. This 10.7 magnitude galaxy has a surface brightness of 12.8. It spans 4 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual diameter of 60,000 light years. We see it 30 degrees from edge-on.

Despite our oblique view of this galaxy, numerous star clusters and HII regions are visible in the 2 bright distinct arms. These arms are interesting – each are high contrast for the first 180 degrees, then becoming low brightness for the last 180 degrees.

The 13th magnitude companion galaxy to the lower left is NGC 3896. Star streams are faintly visible connecting these two galaxies, which both appear somewhat disturbed. I am not sure why Arp did not include this pair in his catalog. This pair reminds me a bit of the much more famous galaxy pair of M51 and NGC 5193, although that pair is about twice as large in our apparent view.
