Description

Nothing like seeing something you’ve captured before come to new life! Captured last year at Cherry Springs, PA, I decided I wanted to run a quick re-process of this dataset. I have a few projects I’m still collecting new data on and it’ll be quite some time til those projects are finished. After taking a quick peak at this dataset, I found some hydrogen hiding in background space. I did this by neutralizing star intensity (using starnet v2) and by using color masks to enhance these red pockets. Targeted noise reduction in background space smoothed everything out and by adding the stars in later it really allowed me to push the dust a bit further without blowing out the image.

The Cocoon Nebula (IC 5146) is a reflection/emission nebula located approximately 2,500 light years away in the constellation Cygnus. With an apparent magnitude of 7.2 and an apparent size of 12 arcminutes, it can be observed in amateur telescopes. Also catalogued as Sh 2-125 and Caldwell 19, the nebula is an active star-forming region associated with the young open cluster Collinder 470.
