Description

The solar corona at mid eclipse

A High Dynamic Range blend of 10 exposures taken at ISO 100, stacked from fastest to slowest with disk and brightest corona selected into a Gaussian blur exclusion mask for each layer except the bottom one. The corona exclusion was progressively widened going up the stack from 8 to 50 units nearest white. Also the width of the Gaussian blur was increased at the same rate. The balance between layers was set by changing the opacity

Exposure (1/n) 8 15 20 30 45 60 90 125 180 250

Opacity (%) 75 80 85 85 85 90 90 90 100 100

Mask Blur Width 50 40 30 30 20 20 15 10 10 8

Mask White Width 50 40 30 30 20 20 15 10 10 8

A radial difference mask (20 degree spin) was made from the HDR image using the standard Pellett/Shiota method in Photoshop (offset 128, scale 1). This mask was combined with the HDR using Colour Burn blending for the inner region and Linear Light blending for the outer. The two were stacked (CB and bottom, LL at top with a blending mask created from the LL layer)
