This image is of one of the closest galaxies in our local own local group. It is the closest large galaxy to us and is classified as a barred spiral galaxy. It has a diameter of about 152,000 Light years and is about 2.5 million light years from earth.

It was believed that the Andromeda galaxy was 1.5 times our own milky way, but new research has revealed that the Milky way and Andromeda have a Similar Mass. While the Milky way has a similar mass the Andromeda does have the largest diameter in the local cluster.

Another interesting fact is the galaxy is expected to collide with our own in 4-5 billion years to form a new galaxy. If you have access to dark skies you can actually view Andromeda with the naked eye which is impressive considering how far away it is. To give a little better perspective on the size in the sky. If you were to take a picture of the full moon and then a picture of the Andromeda galaxy with the same camera you could fit 6 full moons on the Andromeda galaxy.

Due to the proximity and size to earth it is one of the most studied galaxies and helps provide us with lots of information on galaxies and the universe.

The image is composed of 3 pictures to forma mosaic. Total amount of exposure is a little over 6 hours. I hope you enjoy the picture.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status.
