Description

In the center of the bullseye of this beautiful nebula is a very young star cluster, NGC 2244, less than 5 million years old. These young, ultra-hot stars are blasting out radiation which ionizes surrounding HII clouds from which they formed. The solar winds are so strong, especially in X-rays, that they heat the surrounding gas to over 6 million degrees when they slam into it. According to researchers, “This [type of] multimillion-degree gas radiated as X rays is one of the long-sought sources of energy and elements in the Milky Way galaxy's interstellar medium.”

The central region is about 50 light years across, and the entire nebula is about 130 light years across (but of course the borders are diffuse so it depends on where you consider the “edge” to be).  It lies about 5,200 light years away, in the constellation Monoceros.
