Description

Have you ever experienced one of those nights where absolutely nothing goes right? I got to live through two of those nights last week while trying to take this image of NGC 7380, the Wizard Nebula in Cepheus. Gusty winds produced sub-par guiding, collimation was slightly off, and it was my first time to image with my new narrowband filters so as always it took some extra fiddling. What made it worse was that my family and I were on a trip to Fredericksburg, TX which, in addition to delicious wine, offers some decently dark skies (Bortle 5 vs my usual Bortle 8 )! I had to work some real magic to get 4 1/2 hours of integration time, and I'm not talking your run-of-the-mill Patronus charm. At one point I told my wife I was close to Wingardium Leviosa-ing my telescope into the adjoining pasture... Thankfully I didn't and I was actually able to finish this one off in my backyard thanks to the new filters (Bortle 5 vs 8 didn't seem to have any real impact on the quality of the image). The power of narrowband! This is actually the first image I've done in SHO so if you're looking at getting into narrowband imaging and have questions, send them my way! I can definitely tell you what NOT to do lol. Clear skies!
