Description

Markarian’s Chain
...............................
This is the name of a group of galaxies located in the constellation Virgo, stretched at a distance of 50-130 million light-years away from us. Although some galaxies in the attached image were discovered by Charles Messier in the 1700s and by William Herschel in the 1800s, this chain of galaxies was named after the Armenian astrophysicist Markarian, who discovered that this string of bright galaxies shares a common motion through space.
Markarian Chain is one of the favorite spring targets, for both visually astronomy and astrophotography, especially since it does not require the use of a large telescope to see the entire string of galaxies. Unfortunately, a compromise must be made, meaning that the details of the imaged galaxies are not among the most spectacular ones.
