Description

Apenninus Mountains and the Eratosthenes crater. The great mountain range located on the eastern edge of the Mare Imbrium stands out in the image, rising up to 5.5 km above the surface of the Moon, higher than the rocky mountains of the United States. To the south we find the Eratosthenes crater, 59km wide and 3.7km deep. A very cool feature is the light and dark areas in the lunar relief. The dark parts are basically formed by basalt, a remarkably dark volcanic rock. the clear and shiny parts are formed by Anortite, a mineral formed by Calcium, Aluminum, Silicon and Oxygen. This mineral is quite abundant on the Moon's original surface, having been mostly buried by the intense lava flows that plagued the Moon for millions of years. Nowadays, this mineral is found mainly in mountain ranges, in the crater peaks and steep edges and in impact ejections.
