Description

M31, the Andromeda Galaxy, is a spiral galaxy 2.5 million light years from Earth that was first cataloged by Charles Messier in 1764. M31 is about 10 billion years old, about the same size as the Milky Way and is moving towards it at a velocity of about 300 km/s. In about 4 billion years the two galaxies are expected to merge and form a single large elliptical galaxy. The satellite galaxies M32 and M110 can also be seen.
