Description

Time Lapse - Sunset with Venus and Jupiter

I have been waiting for this time lapse for months, planning it weekly to find the right time when the skies would be light with clouds, the sun would be setting followed by Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn. In the last two frames you can see Saturn through the tree branches.

I drove the 160 miles (260 km) to an overlook off the Blue Ridge Parkway called Raven’s Roost. The parking lot sits on top of a 100 foot (30 m) cliff at an elevation of 3,200 feet (976 m). Looking west you can see more of the Blue Ridge Mountains and in the far distance the Allegheny Mountains. I climbed a bit further up on the cliff for my setup but not near the cliff edge.

I started shooting at 5:15 pm shooting a frame every 25 seconds. I used the Skywatcher All View in Time Lapse mode panning slowly from right to left. I had the Canon T3i set on Aperture Priority with an ISO of 1600, f/2.8 on the Rokinon 16 mm lens. I programmed it to shoot 200 frames but I dropped two at the beginning as people photo-bombed the foreground. I shot this on High Quality JPG.

Just before the red zone fades, you can see Venus coming in from the left of center and Jupiter further left and higher (for those in the southern hemisphere is will look backward). I completed the project at 6:44 pm. At the start the temperature was 30 degrees F (-1 C) and at the end it was 24 F (-4 C).

I hope you enjoy this short time lapse as much as I did seeing it take place.
