Description

I wanted to see if I could see any of the Cat's Eye Nebula's faint outer halo. IC 4677 showed up easily, just to the right of the overexposed core of the nebula. The visibility of some of the other brighter concentrations is debatable. The unintentional star of the show, however is the galaxy NGC 6552 on the left side of the image. It is capsule-shaped with a star-like core, embedded in an oval halo. Very interesting! I'd like to see a Hubble Space Telescope image of this galaxy! It is apparently a Seyfert galaxy that lies about 370,000,000 light-years away. That is quite a contrast to the Cat's Eye Nebula, which lies a hundred-thousand times closer, between "only" 3,000 to 5,000 light-years away.
