Description

So, I decided to try some spectroscopy with the Star Analyser 100, a very nice and simple device that offers the possibility of doing some actual scientific observations with our usual material. As recommended I started with a type A star (I had the choice between Vega and Altair). The spectrum has to be focused separately from the actual star (the focal plane is not identical). I used the ASI224MC since it has bigger pixels compared to the ASI290MM,a bit more favorable with my setup. The spectrum was not horizontal, it was on the diagonal of the chip but with this spacing it can probably fit on the ASI224 chip entirely.

Type A stars are hotter than the Sun (around 10 000 K ) and have prominent Balmer lines (Hydrogen absorbtion lines due to the energy absorbed by the electron that corresponds to its specific quantic transitions between the energy levels) which make them useful for calibration and are easier to start with. I was pretty happy to see that the correspondence with the reference professional data was pretty good and the temperature I determined with the RSpec software was around 10100 K (the fit is not perfect in the middle part of the spectrum, so the accuracy is pretty subjective). T of Vega is between 8150 -10100 K. The Halpha dip is not very sharp probably due to seeing and underexposure in this part (lot of learning needed).

The data was analysed without Bias, Darks or Flats, using an avi film shot with RSpec and choosing a good frame. I tried stacking a ser file in Autostakkert but there was no improvement (I have to learn how to place the reference points correctly). It's not much, but it's pretty interesting to be able to determine the spectral class and temperature of the star from the backyard !
