Description

Yes asteroids keep flying through my images. Sometimes they are so big as to have their discover's name attached. This is one of them. Mouseover the original image to see the path of Asteroid 6181 Bobweber (1986 RW). It's path was traced through the RGB data for this image. I only put in every other image so as to see the descrete path of the asteroid, rather than a blurred white line.

If you see an asteroid in your images, this is how to ID it.

First take a sub containing the asteroid, crop it so the object is at the center of the cropped image.
Plate solve that image. Now you have its coordinates and the time of the image from the fits header.
Now go to the NASA Small-Body Identification Tool (https://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/tools/sb_ident.html#/)
Put in your time and coordinates data and see if there is a good match. Usually you will find it easily.
However, if you don't, you might have spotted something completely new.

Also, there is an interesting story behind the naming of the asteroid 6181 Bobweber. You can read it here (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Weber_(astronomer).

Have fun with all this.

Eric
