Description

Most lunar craters craters are small and simple impact. But for some larger than 20-30 km impact crater morphology is modified by volcanism related activities. Pitatus is an excellent example and similar craters share many of these characteristics: shallow ground flooded by lava seas, radial and concentric rilles.

Schultz ranked the floor fractured craters into 6 types based on the depth of the crater, the fracture pattern and the type of ground.

PItatus falls in Class VI, has broad, shallow floor fractured edges.

The region southeast of Pitatus is heavily cratered like the entire south polar region. It is an area rich en contrasts when the Sun is rising or setting there. In this photo we can see great setting with the characteristics described above.
