Description

This is what the fuss was all about - a Full Annular Eclipse doesn't come across the US too often. And it would be nearly centered when viewed from the Grand Canyon South Rim...

The Grand Canyon drew quite the crowd - it was the busiest that I'd EVER seen the South Rim Drive. There were 10s of thousands out to see the Eclipse. Every lookout area and roadside pullout was overflowing, and the various Visitor Centers had SRO crowds. The Park Service had orgainzed for a large number of Solar Telescopes to be setup for public viewing at both the main Visitor Center and at Desert View - Tucson's Astronomy Club mostly - plus they had a few NASA Dignitaries on hand with presentations. Overall the Park Service did a Good Job promoting the Grand Canyon on this day.

I was setup about a 1/2 mile west of Desert View, with Navajo and Lipan Point Lookouts further to the west. When the first part of the eclipse was visible, you could hear shouts from all along the South Rim. AND when it reached Full Annulity (this picture), the cheer that went up sounded like a Football Game (echoing into and out of the Canyon) !!
