Description

This galaxy is located in the direction of the Virgo galaxy cluster but not part of it - it is much closer at 30 million lightyears. Its size is about 50000 light years, so half the size of the Milky Way, but its central black hole is larger by a factor of 240. Being able to photograph it is quite special to me, as it is one of the first deep sky objects I read about as a child. I'm glad it worked out this well, as it never rises above 28° here.

M104 has an extensive halos of about 2000 globular clusters. I've annotated the inverted version with detected globulars. They are marked in blue. Almost all globulars with a listed V magnitude in SIMBAD are detected, there are only a couple that have too little contrast against the galaxy disk in this rendering.

Also in the FOV are quite a few quasars, which are marked in red and annotated with redshifts, where available from the Milliquas survey. I have not filtered those for those that are detected, but quite a few are, up to a redshift of z=3.2 (upper left), corresponding to a light travel time of 11 billion years. That quasar is now at a distance of about 21 billion light years.

I‘ve not singled out the object with a higher quoted redshift because they are seen through the galactic halo of M104 - I‘m not sure how much that affects the redshift measurements.
