Description

I was introduced to this scene as a boy by a color image by the Hale Telescope. I have a print of that same image now, and while it takes me back to the wonder of those days, I have to say this one is much better. In the Palomar image, the entire inner nebula is completely blown out, and only faint traces of the outer nebulosity are captured. It's amazing that amateur equipment today can in some ways outperform the 200" in its early decades of operation.

This nebula barely fits in the field of view of the 17" Planewave with the Apogee F16M camera. I should probably make a mosaic of this to expand it, especially at the top and left. That may have to wait for a different winter. We'll see...

Image acquired at Sugar Grove Observatory, a facility of Twin City Amateur Astronomers (tcaa.us).
