NGC 4217

This object is an edge-on spiral galaxy located 60 million light years away in the constellation of Canes Venatici at a declination of +47 degrees. It spans 5 arc-minutes in our apparent view. This corresponds to a diameter of 90,000 light years. This object is often imaged but never really looked at – it lies 1/2 degree west of M106.

We appear to be peaking just over the plane of the disk from our viewing perspective, which moves the mid-line dust lane just below the bright galaxy bulge. The dust lane appears uneven, especially on the right side of the disk.

The interesting galaxy at lower left is NGC 4226. This galaxy is much further away, at 0.4 billion light years, and is bigger at a Milky Way size 120,000 light years in diameter. The galaxy appears to have 2 pseudo-rings, a bright inner ring and a dimmer warped outer ring.
