Description

This object is a trio of galaxies all located 200 million light years away in the constellation of Eridanus at a declination of -10 degrees.

The two galaxies on the left are the spiral galaxy NGC 1155 (top) and the lenticular galaxy NGC 1154. Each galaxy spans about 1 arc-minute in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 70,000 light years. Both galaxies seem a bit disturbed from their gravitational interaction. I love star streams, and it is fun to see the faint star stream, about 100,000 light years in length, which connects these two galaxies.

The spiral galaxy on the right is MCG-02-08-033. This galaxy spans about 3 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a large diameter of 170,000 light years. It is interesting to me that this galaxy is so much larger than the other two yet it has not earned a NGC designation. The galaxy is almost edge-on yet plenty of structure is visible, including an inner ring and a less defined mid-disk ring. Below this object, a small faint irregular blue galaxy (2MASX J02573674-1010563) can be seen.
