Description

This Astrobin Debut Object, also known as NGC 7236, is a trio of galaxies located 340 million light years away in the constellation of Pegasus at a declination of +14 degrees. In his Arp catalog, Dr. Arp classified this object into the category of Galaxies with Diffuse Counter-tails.

The 3 galaxies at the center of the image, from upper right to lower left, are NGC 7236, NGC 7237 and LEDA 200377. They all look like lenticular galaxies to me, although they could also be ellipticals. A large star halo encompasses all 3 galaxies, suggesting that at least 2 of these galaxies are interacting. This halo extends about 250,000 light years in length and has 2 main lobes, one extending up on the right side and one extending down on the left side.

These 3 galaxies are part of a larger group - all of the galaxies seen in this image are a similar distance away. I could not find a designation for this larger group.
