Description

I have always found the North America nebula difficult visually, even with a light pollution filter. In the darkest skies it is visible with a wide field and low power - binoculars are ideal. Just 20 minutes exposure through an old SLR lens and my dual narrow band filter, provided my best view to date.

NGC 7000 lies around 1600 light years from us in the rich Cygnus arm of the Milky Way. It is about 50 LY across and the hydrogen emissions brightest around the 'Gulf of Mexico'. With just 10 X 2min exposures, I am pleased to have captured some detail in this region, but longer exposures are required to bring out 'Florida' and to differentiate IC 5070 the 'pelican nebula'. I will try at f3 in my SCT to see what further detail I can achieve in this region, and around the famous Cygnus wall.

Description: There is an ugly band on many of my images, which I have attempted to hide by boosting contrast and tweaking the blackpoint in this version. I fear this may be a damaged array in my ageing DSI-IIC OSC, but will persevere for the time being. I still prefer the extra detail visible in the original image, even if this is somewhat noisier.
