Description

This object, also known as NGC 6742, is a tiny planetary nebula located 17,000 light years away in the constellation of Draco at a declination of +48 degrees. This 13th magnitude nebula spans 30 arc-seconds, about the same apparent width to us as the planet Jupiter. This apparent size makes it one of the smallest Abell planetary nebulae. The actual diameter of the nebula is 2 light years, so it is not that small in true size, it just is very far away from us for a PN. Even though it is small, it is a beautiful color and there is some structure to be seen, including the faint 20th magnitude central star.
