Description

NGC 5857 and NGC 5859 are two galaxies in the constellation Bootes near the border with Serpens Caput. Despite their apparent close proximity, they are thought to be coincidental neighbors from our line of sight, not interacting galaxies.

NGC 5859 is the larger in apparent size, measuring 3.0' by 0.8' with a magnitude of about 12.5.

NGC 5857 is the smaller in apparent size, measuring 1.2' by 0.6' with a magnitude of about 13.0.

I don't usually select such small galaxies for imaging, but these two were in a good position to image from my back yard on May 26th, meaning they were high in the sky and away from the light pollution to my west. In addition, they are not often seen, so why not?

Luminance subs were 6 minutes binned 1x1, and RGB subs were 6 minutes binned 2x2.
