Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a faint extragalactic open cluster located 40,000 light years away in the constellation of Canis Minor at a declination of +2 degrees.  It spans 2 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 20 light years.  This cluster was discovered in 1994 by Dr. Walter Saurer.

This object is near Berkeley 29, which is the most distant open cluster in the Milky Way.  The Sauer 1 open cluster is fainter and slightly closer.  It lies 65,000 light years from the galactic center.  Like Berkeley 29, it is believed to have originated outside of the Milky Way galaxy, in the Sagittarius Dwarf galaxy.  It is now within our Milky Way, as part of the former galaxy’s stellar stream.
