Description

Here is a photograph of Messier 106, or M 106, and also known as NGC 4258. It is a spiral galaxy in the constellation Canes Venatici (The Hunting Dogs), and located at a distance of about 22 to 25 million light-years away from Earth. If you look around the full resolution photograph, you will see tons of other galaxies, which is not unusual since this region of the sky is far away from the plane of the Milky Way.

I took this photograph on May 7, 2021 and May 8, 2021 at a dark site (Bortle 3) located in California's central coast.

- Telescope: Astro-Tech AT130EDT with Astro-Tech 0.8x reducer/flattener

- Mount: iOptron CEM70

- Camera: ZWO ASI533MC Pro (OSC)

- 200 x 2 minute exposures with Astronomik L3 (luminance filter)

- 27 x 5 minute exposures with Optolong L-eXtreme (narrowband filter) to capture some H-alpha data so that I could enhance the HII regions

- Processed in PixInsight
