Description

This object, also known as NGC 7253, is a pair of interacting galaxies located 210 million light years away in the constellation of Pegasus at a declination of +29 degrees. In his Arp catalog, Dr. Arp classified this object into the category of Double Galaxies - Interacting.

Each galaxy spans about 1.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 90,000 light years. The 2 galaxies are clearly interacting, with a stellar bridge spanning between them.

These 2 galaxies look so similar that they seem like twins. Both have a similar length and thickness, with clearly defined meandering dust lanes throughout. The inner section of both disks is fairly intact and undisturbed, but the outer portions of both disks are heavily disturbed.

Numerous bright and colorful stars dot the foreground in this portion of the Milky Way.
