Description

This image peers into a small fraction of the Virgo cluster of galaxies.

From left to right:

Unique in this image is the Super Nova 2022 that appeared April16th 2022.  The subs for this image began on April 19th for several nights.  SN2022 is visible in NGC4647 and appears as a very bright star. Appears almost as bright as the core of M60 to its left.

Messier 60 or M60, also known as NGC 4649, is an elliptical galaxy approximately 57 million light-years away in the equatorial constellation of Virgo.

Together with NGC 4647, an intermediate spiral galaxy estimated to be around 63 million light-years away in the constellation of Virgo, they form a pair known as Arp 116.

NGC 4638 is an edge-on lenticular galaxy located about 50 million light-years away in the constellation Virgo.

Messier 59 or M59, also known as NGC 4621, is an elliptical galaxy in the equatorial constellation of Virgo. It is a member of the Virgo Cluster.  M59 is very rich in globular clusters, with a population of them that has been estimated to be around 2,200.

NGC 4607 is an edge-on spiral galaxy located about 56 million light-years away[2] in the constellation Virgo.

NGC 4606 is a spiral galaxy located about 55 million light-years away[2] in the constellation of Virgo.  It has a disturbed stellar disk suggesting the actions of gravitational interactions. NGC 4607 may be a possible companion of NGC 4606.  However, their redshifts differ by about 600 km/s, making it unlikely that they are a gravitationally bound pair. NGC 4606 is also member of the Virgo Cluster.
